Doing Some Social Good on Youtube
In my last article, I talked about getting the wrong kind of publicity on YouTube. In this article I am going to talk to you about using YouTube for the greater good.
YouTube is great because you can use it to get important messages across to a large audience in a short amount of time. In the best case your videos can go viral, which means it rapidly circulates on the Internet through social media.
Here are some examples of videos, made specifically for YouTube, for the purpose of raising awareness on global issues.
Why These Videos Work (Spoiler Alert)
Most if not all of these videos appeal highly to emotion. Especially the “Breathe In, Breathe Out”, and “A New Sound: Green For All” videos. While watching these videos you start to feel a sense of urgency to assist in their cause. Their cause becomes your cause. Both of these videos really play with your senses. You hear a girl wheezing, and it almost puts you in panic mode. You hear heavy breathing and you feel like it’s you who’s breathing.
The “Save the Bronx Zoo and New York Aquarium” video is hilarious. Although it is funny, it doesn’t take away from the cause. You start watching a meeting that you believe to be between two people but it ends up being between a man and one of the zoo animals. It gets your attention and encourages you to pass the video along because it’s entertaining and it’s for a good cause.
Remember those choose your own adventure books that you had as a kid? Well it’s now been done on Youtube. For the first time, you can choose the ending you want for the video that you are watching. This is what the “Choose a Different Ending” video does. If you choose the wrong ending, something bad happens and it puts that pit in the middle of your stomach that screams “Help these people!”. If you choose the right ending all ends up well and you get that warm fuzzy feeling that let’s you know you can make a difference. Either way, it gets the right response out of people.
Harry Potter. Enough said. Everyone knows this book/movie series. What if you combined it with doing some social good. Everyone will pay attention because they are already attached to the one side of it. Anyone who likes Harry Potter…which is pretty much everyone will want to see the video. The “Harry Potter and the Dark Lord Waldemart” video makes people aware of how Walmart is putting businesses out of business, while going along with the Harry Potter storyline. If it’s really entertaining people will pay attention. Sometimes parodies are the way to go.
The “World Water Day video from charity:water” shows great clips along with great music, but most importantly between clips it shows informative facts that really make you understand the importance of their cause. 85% of the population has no drinking water. Unsafe water & sanitation causes 80% of all sickness and disease. These are powerful statements, intended to make its audience pay attention. And they do.
People can definitely make a difference in a positive way by using YouTube to get out their messages. Making a video that appeals to emotion, gives out the facts, and entertains people is the best way to get people to respond.
Until next time,
